The main takeaway: A well-engineered spiral freezer freezes more product in less floor space and holds consistent quality across every batch, because it is built around your product, throughput, and plant layout.
Freezing is where a food production line protects its margins or quietly loses them. Product leaves the process line warm, and every minute before it reaches its target core temperature chips away at quality, yield, and shelf life. If the freezing stage is undersized or poorly matched to the product, it undermines everything the line has invested upstream.
This is why the freezer is rarely an off-the-shelf purchase for high-volume producers. Throughput targets, product size, ceiling height, and sanitation needs differ from one plant to the next, so the spiral conveyor has become the go-to choice for continuous, space-efficient freezing and cooling. Its biggest strength is fitting hundreds or thousands of linear feet of conveying surface into a compact footprint.
Since 2009, CONOVEY has supplied industrial conveyor systems to the food processing and packaging sectors, and that experience shapes how each spiral is built around the line it will serve rather than forced to fit a fixed design.
This guide covers how that engineering actually works. It starts with where spiral freezing fits in a production line, the core components of a spiral freezing system, and how capacity is matched to throughput. It then looks at how the three main drive technologies differ and how airflow shapes freeze rates. Finally, it covers what to weigh when working with a Canadian spiral freezer manufacturer on layout, retrofits, and long-term support.
Spiral freezing sits at the transition point between processing and packaging. Product arrives from forming, cooking, coating, or portioning while still ambient or chilled, and it has to reach a frozen core before it can be bagged, boxed, and stored. In effect, the spiral bridges the line that makes a product and the line that ships it.
The choice of a spiral conveyor over a straight tunnel usually comes down to two things: dwell time and floor space. Many products need a long time in the cold to reach a safe core temperature without losing texture, and a straight tunnel built for that dwell would stretch the length of a warehouse. A spiral coils that same belt length into a small footprint, which is what lets it slot so cleanly into existing plants.
The same coiled design does much more than freeze. It can elevate, lower, accumulate, proof, heat and hold, cool, or freeze a wide range of food and CPG products. That versatility matters as demand for chilled and frozen foods keeps rising. A spiral cooling conveyor, for instance, brings product down to a target temperature instead of freezing it, but the same principle of long belt travel in a compact space applies either way.
A spiral also has to work with everything around it. The infeed needs to match process line speed, and the discharge has to hand off cleanly to packaging. Getting that integration right is easier with a partner that builds the whole line, not just the spiral. CONOVEY builds material handling conveyors for food processors, CPG manufacturers, and robotics integrators across the food and beverage and industrial automation markets, so the spiral is designed as one link in a continuous line rather than a standalone box.
Understanding what goes into a spiral freezer makes it far easier to evaluate one. Every system is built from the same functional building blocks, and the same core parts appear in a spiral cooling conveyor where the duty is chilling rather than freezing.
How these components are specified and combined is where different spiral freezer manufacturers distinguish themselves. The parts list looks similar across suppliers, but the engineering that ties them to a specific product and throughput is what determines real-world performance.
Capacity is the first thing a spiral freezer has to get right, and it involves more than a single output number. A freezer sized correctly for one product can be a poor match for another, because capacity depends on how much heat has to be removed, not simply how many units pass through.
The starting point is throughput, measured in pounds or kilograms per hour. From there, the manufacturer works backward through three questions:
This is where the compact footprint of a spiral conveyor pays off. Large systems can be built with many tiers and wide belts, packing high throughput into a small floor area.
Product load per unit of belt area is the variable that catches producers out most often. A dense, thick portion carries far more heat than a thin, light one, so two lines with identical piece counts can place very different demands on the same freezer. The Positive Drive system handles this well, running much heavier loads than conventional designs and allowing more throughput in a smaller footprint.
The table below shows how product characteristics drive the capacity decision.
| Product Factor | Effect on Capacity | Engineering Response |
| High piece density or thickness | More heat to remove per unit | Longer dwell time and higher refrigeration load |
| High volume throughput | More product on the belt at once | More tiers and wider belt in the same footprint |
| Sticky or delicate product | Limited stacking and spacing | Wider belt and gentle, positively driven handling |
| Oily product | Slip and belt tracking issues | Positive Drive engagement instead of friction drive |
The belt and its drive system are the mechanical heart of a spiral freezer, and the configuration chosen shapes reliability, hygiene, and how product is handled. A capable spiral conveyor manufacturer works across more than one drive technology, matching the system to the product rather than the reverse. There are three main spiral drive technologies, each with its own strengths, and matching the right one to the product and duty cycle is what makes the difference.
The Positive Drive Spiral, or PosiDrive Spiral, uses a stainless-steel grid belt with driving tabs on the inside edge that engage UHMW vertical ribs on the center drum. The system behaves like a timing gear, so the belt runs smoothly with no pulse or stutter and the product stays firmly in rows through the spiral. Overall system tension is roughly 50 percent lower than a conventional slip drive, because the load is spread evenly along the whole belt path.
This technology suits both new systems and upgrades to older slip drive spirals, and it works especially well with oily products that cause tracking problems on friction-driven belts. It handles heavier loads, needs very little maintenance, and up-running spirals require only a single cage motor and VFD.
The OutRunner Spiral, built under the SpanTech brand, is driven externally by a vertical line shaft, with sprockets at each tier turning the outer edge of the chain. Because every tier shares the load, the central drive cage is removed for a simpler, cleaner build, and the design allows real flexibility in loads, speeds, and incline angles.
OutRunner spirals run at speeds up to 400 feet per minute, reverse fully for accumulating applications, and draw very little power. One large tandem dual spiral runs on a single 2 HP drive motor. Because these units share components with the standard SpanTech line, they also reduce spare parts and simplify troubleshooting.
Conventional slip drive spirals remain a large and viable market. The cage provides the main drive, holding the belt edge in tight contact so friction carries it through the system, while an auxiliary drive sets the belt speed. This technology has been established in food plants since the 1960s.
Slip drive systems can be built with more than 30 tiers and belt widths up to 60 inches, which makes them well suited to large production operations. Their long track record also means a wide variety of belting is available to match specific requirements, and that belting tends to be more cost-effective than other options.
Airflow is where a spiral freezer earns or loses its performance. Two freezers with the same belt length and refrigeration capacity can deliver very different freeze rates depending on how cold air moves across the product. This is the most demanding part of engineering, and it is often what separates leading equipment builders from the rest.
Freezing is fundamentally about moving heat from the product into the circulating air. The faster and more uniformly cold air passes over each item, the faster the surface freezes and the sooner the core follows. Poor airflow leaves warm pockets, uneven freezing, and a product that reaches the discharge before it is fully frozen.
Designers control airflow through fan placement, air direction, and how the airstream is guided through the belt stack. The open center of an externally driven spiral conveyor can improve air movement through the tiers, while cage-driven designs manage airflow around the drum. The right pattern depends on product height, spacing, and how densely the belt is loaded.
Uniformity matters as much as velocity. A well-designed spiral delivers consistent air across the full width of the belt so a product on the edge freezes at the same rate as one in the center. That consistency is the difference between reliable output and a line that produces variable results, and it is helped by the steady, pulse-free product movement that positively driven belts provide.
Once capacity and drive technology are settled, the layout question follows: does the line need one spiral, or two working together? The answer depends on throughput, available space, and the freeze profile the product requires.
A single spiral handles most applications. It is simpler to install, easier to clean, and lower in capital cost. For a line with steady throughput and a product that freezes within a manageable dwell time, a single well-sized spiral is usually the most efficient choice.
Tandem layouts, which pair two spirals together, come into play when throughput is very high or when the required dwell time is longer than one practical spiral can deliver. Ice cream and other demanding products often need this setup, and CONOVEY has built dual OutRunner systems that run on a single 2 HP motor. Splitting the load across two units also lets the first spiral crust-freeze the surface before the second completes the core, which protects delicate products.
The comparison below outlines when each layout tends to make sense.
| Consideration | Single Spiral Layout | Tandem Spiral Layout |
| Throughput | Low to moderate volume | Very high volume |
| Required dwell time | Achievable in one spiral | Exceeds a single unit |
| Footprint | Smaller and simpler | Larger, needs more floor |
| Capital and maintenance | Lower | Higher, two systems to service |
| Product handling | Standard freezing | Crust freeze then core freeze |
The defining advantage of a spiral freezer is how it uses vertical space, and planning around that is central to a successful installation. The whole point of coiling the belt is to gain long dwell time without a long floor plan, so the engineering has to work within the height the building offers.
Ceiling height sets a literal ceiling on capacity. A taller enclosure allows more belt tiers, which means more dwell time and more product on the belt at once. Conventional slip drive systems can reach more than 30 tiers, so when a plant has the clearance, a spiral can pack remarkable throughput into a modest floor area by building upward instead of outward.
Footprint planning also accounts for the space around the freezer, not just the unit itself. Access for cleaning, room for belt maintenance, clearance for refrigeration equipment, and safe walkways all factor into the layout. Features such as maintenance-free idle rollers and cage bushings, along with a built-in belt wash, reduce the service burden once the spiral is running.
This is why footprint planning belongs at the design stage rather than as an afterthought. A spiral can be built in a range of configurations, including spiral-at-side and spiral-at-inlet arrangements, so the enclosure, the infeed and discharge direction, and the drive position are all shaped by the space a plant can realistically give.
Consistent freezing is maintained by the control system that governs belt speed, temperature, and airflow. Good controls turn a well-built mechanical system into one that delivers the same result on the last run of the shift as the first. Variable speed operation is standard across these spirals.
Belt speed is the primary lever. Slowing the belt lengthens dwell time for a denser product, while speeding it up keeps a lighter line moving efficiently. On a modern spiral, this adjustment is made through the drive and control interface rather than by mechanical change, so operators can adapt to a changing product mix without stopping the line.
Modern spirals are designed for energy-efficient operation, with low power consumption and reliable continuous handling, and efficient drives also reduce maintenance. The self-synchronizing action of the Positive Drive system keeps the belt running smoothly and product firmly in rows, which protects freeze consistency across long runs.
Product detection sensors and full product guides round out the picture, keeping items correctly oriented from infeed to discharge. Together with steady belt motion, these controls protect the uniform dwell time that consistent freezing depends on.
In food production, a freezer is only as good as it is clean. Sanitary construction is a design principle that shapes every surface, joint, and drain in the system, not a feature added at the end. A freezer that cannot be cleaned quickly becomes a food safety liability, however well it freezes.
Hygienic design starts with materials and geometry. Fully welded stainless steel construction, clean UHMW belt supports, and the removal of unnecessary structure all reduce the places contamination can hide. Externally driven spirals remove the central cage entirely, opening a wide, clean spiral center that is easier to inspect and wash.
Washdown capability determines how practical daily sanitation really is. A spiral built for food production has to withstand cleaning without water reaching the drives or bearings. To manage this, features such as maintenance-free cage bushings, enclosed gear motors, and a built-in belt wash are used, and belt materials such as stainless grid and food-grade acetal are chosen to survive repeated cleaning cycles.
For manufacturers serving regulated food sectors, sanitary design also has to satisfy standards and audits. Building to recognized hygienic design principles from the outset means the equipment supports a plant’s food safety program rather than working against it.
Not every spiral goes into a new plant. Many are installed into lines that are already running, and retrofitting brings its own challenges. The freezer has to fit the existing space, integrate with equipment already in place, and go in with the least possible disruption to production.
One of the most common retrofits is converting an older slip drive spiral to the Positive Drive system. Trained technicians handle the conversion, and the upgrade can pay for itself over time. A converted spiral gains lower belt tension, smoother product movement, and better reliability, especially on oily products that struggle on friction drives.
Physical fit is the next constraint. An existing building has fixed ceiling height, columns, and utility routing, so the spiral has to be designed to work within those limits. A range of configurations, including super-tight radius options and spiral-at-inlet or side arrangements, helps thread a new system into the available space.
Integration and timing complete the picture. A retrofit spiral has to synchronize with an established process and packaging line, and every day of downtime carries real cost. A well-planned retrofit minimizes interruption by pre-assembling and testing as much as possible before the line is stopped.
For food producers in Canada, working with a domestic manufacturer carries practical advantages beyond the sale. A local partner understands the regulatory environment, the climate, and the logistics of installing and supporting equipment across the country.
Proximity matters most when something needs attention. When the manufacturer is close by, service visits, spare parts, and technical support arrive faster and without cross-border friction. That responsiveness is easier to sustain from within North America than from a distant supplier.
Canadian manufacturers also build with the local operating environment in mind, from ambient conditions to the standards Canadian food producers work under. Equipment engineered for the market it serves tends to integrate more smoothly and demand fewer compromises during commissioning.
There is also value in a relationship that outlasts the installation. CONOVEY, a Canada- and USA-based manufacturer of industrial conveyors, serves manufacturers and system integrators worldwide, pairing the responsiveness of a North American partner with the reach to support producers wherever they operate. That kind of continuity is difficult to replicate with a distant supplier.
The last stage of choosing a spiral freezer is often the one that shapes the experience most: the timeline, the installation, and the support that follows. A well-engineered freezer that arrives late or goes unsupported creates problems no amount of good design can fix.
Lead time is a planning reality. A custom spiral is engineered and built to order, so the time from purchase order to a running line spans design, fabrication, delivery, and commissioning. Knowing that schedule upfront lets a producer coordinate the spiral with the rest of a line expansion or upgrade rather than being caught waiting.
Installation quality determines how quickly the system starts earning its keep. A new spiral should be brought up to full performance and validated for throughput and freeze consistency before the line goes into full production.
After-sales support protects the investment over the years that follow. Access to spare parts, especially where an OutRunner shares standard SpanTech components, together with preventive maintenance and responsive service, keeps the freezer performing and extends its working life. When comparing manufacturers, the strength of that ongoing support deserves as much weight as the equipment specifications.
A spiral freezer is never really a product off a shelf. It is a freezing system engineered around one production line, one set of throughput targets, and one plant’s constraints. The drive technology, the belt, the tier count, the airflow, and the footprint all have to fit together for that specific application.
That is why the manufacturer matters as much as the machine. The right partner does the engineering upfront, matching every variable to the line the spiral will serve. That line might call for a spiral freezer, a spiral cooling conveyor, or an accumulation system. The partner then stands behind the equipment through installation and the years that follow. That is the kind of long-term partnership CONOVEY is built around.
Positive Drive spiral conveyors provide smoother product movement, roughly 50 percent lower belt tension, improved reliability, and reduced maintenance. They are especially effective for oily or slippery food products that cause tracking problems on conventional friction-driven belts, and they can handle heavier loads in a smaller footprint.
Sizing starts with throughput in pounds or kilograms per hour, then factors in how long each product needs to reach its core temperature and how much heat it carries. A manufacturer uses those numbers to set belt width, tier count, and refrigeration load, so the spiral matches the heaviest load your line will run. Conventional systems can reach more than 30 tiers and 60-inch belt widths for large operations.
A single spiral handles most lines and is simpler and cheaper to run. A tandem layout uses two spirals together for very high throughput or long dwell times, and it can crust-freeze the product surface in the first unit before the second freezes the core, which protects delicate products such as ice cream novelties.
Yes. The same coiled design used for freezing can elevate, lower, accumulate, proof, heat and hold, or cool products. A spiral cooling conveyor brings product down to a target temperature rather than freezing it, using the same long belt travel packed into a compact footprint.
