Fiera Foods has been a long standing customer of Conovey. Recently they asked the team at Conovey if we could design/build some cleanable urethane belt conveyors for handling scrap dough products. As usual, the engineering team at Conovey went over and above the call of duty and designed a beautiful and easily re-configurable belt conveyor system. Some of the nice features include: low profile framing, quick release take-up system for easy cleaning under belt surfaces, stainless steel bearings, center open v-groove for both tracking and debris removal, standard bolt-on head and tail sections, blue anti-microbial urethane belting and stainless steel knurled and crowned drive roller. These conveyors are very cost effective, highly cleanable and maintenance friendly. We have a winner!

Trophy Foods recently engaged Conovey to develop a robust solution to fill the current 3-lane over wrapper, and be capable of the future 5-lane over wrapper unit going in position at a later date. This was a very interesting project as we were able to utilize our depth of knowledge in automated lane control and, frankly, do some other pretty cool things to make their current process more efficient. When sorting or distributing to multiple lane devices, the CONOVEY laning unit, utilizing smooth low maintenance ball screw drives, coupled with linear roller bearing units is an economical and robust option. The system uses encoder feedback to set the discharge positions, and includes a catch and release mechanism in the design to ensure product is controlled throughout the lane selection process. With our in-house electrical team, we can integrate these into existing lines and provide a turn key distribution system for multi lane packaging applications.

JMP Solutions is one of our major OEM integration partners and we supply many custom conveyor solutions for JMP to integrate into their “end of line” automation solutions. Recently, as part of a much larger scope of supply for Tyson Foods, they asked us to supply two unique solutions to perform very similar functions: make 90 degree turns in a tight footprint for conveyance of poultry cases. Conovey quickly dug into their arsenal and manufactured an ARB 90 degree turn using Intralox 400 60 degree angled roller ARB chain and a Zero Tangent 90 Conveyor using Intralox 2100 chain. Both solutions work perfectly! The Zero Tangent 90 fits into a very tight footprint and smoothly conveys cases with no rotation. The ARB 90 makes an even tighter turn and also changes case orientation. Conovey is a recognized partner of Intralox and has technology licensing in place.

One of our customers, TreeHouse Private Brands has been doing ongoing line upgrades and integrating automated case packing systems in their lines. These units require the product to be presented in a upright position for the top load case packer robotic system. Because typical cartoners load the product into a carton on its side, we had to develop a system to upright these cartons between the cartoner and case packer. Keeping in mind the rate of 120 cartons per minute discharging from the cartoner, an in-line twist unit was developed. This system uses a spine to connect the drive and idle ends of a conveyor, and allows us to make the unit in almost any shape we can form. Also, these units are capable of handling a wide range of product sizes as there is no devices acting on the cartons as they are filled. These units use standard chain components, and can include MicroSpan Transfers, along with any of our chain insert friction links or side walls making it a very versatile solution for positive product reorientation and management. While we were at it, we also built a bunch of really nice sanitary Rexnord style conveyors for the same job. Talk about one stop shopping!

TreeHouse Private Brands has been keeping us busy! We were also tasked to fabricate a super tight turning conveyor that would accumulate cartons prior to the Pearson Case Packer. The cartons needed to be guided the entire way with an easy rail changeover for the two major carton sizes. No problem for the team at Conovey. We built a nice wheel bend conveyor with fast flip rail system and it has worked flawlessly since installation. There are many applications for wheel bend conveyors where factory space constraints are at a premium and the customer is looking for a maintenance friendly solution with ease of changeover.

Robert Braini, Operation Manager at Tasty Selections contacted us last year to develop a solution to a nagging and ongoing issue they were having on their bulk cookie dough line. The problem involved merging two lanes of tubs exiting the bulk cookie depositor. The existing merge was prone to jams and creating costly downtime events. The dead plate and right angle transfer arrangement allowed the tubs hang up on the dead plate which caused timing issues at the merge. We provided a solution that was both incredibly simple and reliable. We integrated our standard Span Tech barrel roller chain in combination with specially developed pop-up fingers (aka “magic fingers”) . The free-spinning barrel rollers run on fixed bed below the chain which, in turn, causes the tubs to accelerate relative to the conveyor speed. The pop-up fingers are even spaced along each lane and offset staggered between the two lanes. As each tub accelerates, it quickly runs up to a finger and stops accelerating. Due to the offset staggering of the fingers between the lanes, the tubs are naturally in position for perfect merge with 100% reliability! The most remarkable aspect of this solution is there are no special or complex controls required. It operates the same as a typical conveyor and only requires a simple VFD (supplied by Conovey) for speed control. This makes this solution a fraction of the cost as compared to servo multi-lane style merging systems.

Prairie West Ice Cream from Winnipeg Manitoba was looking for a solution to assist with their ice cream freezing process. Their current process involved manually palletizing ice cream tubs directly off the line onto skids. The skids were then manually transported into a large holding freezer where they froze over a long period of time. This method suited their needs for tub products but as their business expanded into smaller containers and portion based products, this labour intensive process became a bottle neck. We recommended the installation of a tandem spiral conveying system that could be installed right into their existing holding freezer and still leave room for manual skidding and final hardening. We are never ones to miss an opportunity to supply a solution that is better than anything else in the spiral freezing market. We teamed up with Ashworth Brothers to design and build a revolutionary PosiDrive Tandem Spiral Conveying System. PosiDrive technology is far superior to the conventional and antiquated Slip Drive supplied by most spiral manufacturers today. The technology is based on positively driving the inside edge of the stainless steel spiral chain links with ribbed cage bars. This completely eliminates the “overdrive” requirement of traditional Low Tension Capstan systems and, thereby, eliminates the age old problem of catastrophic belt failures due to the “Christmas Tree” high tension effect (anyone that owns a spiral has probably suffered through this). The positive engagement of chain and cage results in an ultra-low and equal tension design throughout the entire body of the spiral. In fact, we are able to drive an entire UPGO spiral, regardless of size, with a single drum gear-motor. You read this right: there is no requirement for a take-up drive on UPGO spirals! The take up drive on DOWNGO PosiDrive spirals is simply used to pull the vertical chain up through the return path and we use a mechanical slip-clutch to ensure that the take up cannot pull too much tension. It is a bullet proof design that has enabled Conovey to build a completely reliable and virtually maintenance free spiral conveying system. The other spin-off benefit of PosiDrive technology is the spiral conveyor runs perfectly smooth throughout the entire chain path. Pulsing and shuddering found on traditional systems has become a thing of the past and this allows better maintaining of product orientation. This can be a critical factor in many spiral conveying applications.

Carlisle Technology contacted us with a very unique application. Carlisle’s focus is on full featured, plant wide, integrated software and hardware solutions that meet the needs of the Food Processing Industry from receiving to shipping and order fulfillment. This particular application required some unique “out of the box” thinking. Their customer is a major producer of Ginseng products and was looking for an advanced method to automatically sort Ginseng by size. The current method utilized employees to sort manually by looking at the size of the roots and sorting them into bins. Carlisle contacted Conovey because they know that we are the best company to develop specialized automated solutions to unique industry challenges. The minds at Conovey used their extensive knowledge of automated processes to develop a new shape detecting and sortation system that would automatically detect size and send roots the corresponding bins. Conovey developed this new labour saving and yield enhancing technology completely in-house. Rather than try to explain it, the following photos and video do an admirable job at showcasing this exciting technology.

Conovey was approached by JMP Solutions, one of our trusted partners, with a unique application. JMP loves to solve tough problems for customers and improve people’s lives. Their team helps people, plants, facilities and equipment run safer, with better efficiency, improved quality and at a lower cost. JMP asked us if we could re-orient a variety of finished package cases in preparation for their robotic palletizing process. Part of the challenge was to develop a reliable, sanitary solution in a small footprint with maximum orientation flexibility and fully automatic controls. JMP knew that Conovey has extensive experience with Intralox ARB (Activated Roller Ball) technology and felt this technology could help them meet their need. Moreover, since JMP had already purchased over 100 conveyors destined for Tyson Foods, they trusted that Conovey could deliver. The Conovey team developed an eloquent solution using an Intralox S400 45 Degree Passive chain solution riding on a high friction bed with two pneumatically operated pop-out rollers. Activation of pop-out side rollers would be used to let the case run straight through, re-orient from wide side to narrow side, rotate case one turn or rotate case two turns. The end result packs a big punch in a small footprint!

Fairview Conveyors contacted us about an interesting application. One of their customers, LifeLabs is the largest provider of specialty laboratory testing services in Canada. Together with their partners, they provide national access to specialized clinical tests. LifeLabs required a continuous oval conveying loop to facilitate managing testing samples. We had the perfect solution to meet their needs: a Top Chain Only Continuous Side Driven OutRunner Conveyor Loop. It is a mouthful for a simple and robust solution for continuous and transfer-free conveying needs. We use our standard Span Tech chain and framing combined with our special side sprocket drive system. The side sprocket drive allows us to utilize a top chain only in a continuous and unbroken loop. This is perfect for accumulating and carousel type applications where products are required to pass by more than once. We can manufacture these continuous chain systems in nearly any configuration and your imagination is really the only limit. LifeLabs is very happy with the solution and are considering another purchase.

Riverside Natural Foods is a major manufacturer of innovative food products that offer a healthier alternatives to consumers. Riverside has been purchasing conveyors from Conovey for some time now and they recently approached us about building a very sanitary variation of an incline conveyor for moving sticky food products. We were quick to respond and completely re-designed our standard incline to provide an open and highly cleanable conveyor that utilizes Intralox ThermoDrive technology. We have minimized all flat surfaces, kept all areas of the conveyor open and accessible, made the UHMW side guarding so that it can pivot down to fully access the belt and made the hoppers and chutes easily removable for cleaning. Another big benefit of the ThermoDrive belt technology is its ability to run with traditional sprockets under very low tension. This means that there are never tracking issues and belt-stretch take-up units are not required. Plus the belt is extremely hygienic and designed for the toughest sanitary environments. In baseball terms, this design is a Grand Slam and the customer has already ordered more conveyors that utilize it. They know a good thing when they see it!

Space constraints and system flexibility were of primary concerns. We recommended a Span Tech solution designed and manufactured here in Milton, Ontario.
